Rewiring

The inside of the fighter was fairly similar to the larger ship, mostly sleek metal corridors with openings instead of doors. Everything felt more cramped. The first corridor was so tight that Solaria’s shoulders nearly brushed both walls as they walked the few feet to the central area Del was looking for. Luckily, the fighter still had light, but for the life of him, Skylar couldn’t figure out where it originated. It just was there, as if it was coming out of the metal walls themselves.

For some reason, Skylar was expecting a viewscreen like the other ships he’d been on had, but there was just another metal wall.

“We’re near the front of the ship,” Solaria said.

“How can you tell?” Skylar was completely turned around after they entered the ship.

“Predator.” She smiled, flashing fang for a moment. Somehow it wasn’t as threatening behind a helmet as it was when they didn’t have a couple inches of clear polysteel between them.

Skylar sighed at her answer to so many questions, even if it was appropriate in most cases.

“She’s right,” Del said softly, almost dreamily.

Since they had the ship subdued, Skylar and Solaria had turned their attention to other things and dropped back from the link, trusting Filzbalm to let them know if Del needed their mental assistance as he restructured the ship’s thinking.

“How are you holding up?” Skylar asked.

“I’ve never tried this on a human mind, not being a reader and all, but there’s lots of little nuances to this.” Del frowned at the pillar in the center of the small room. It was a darker metal than the rest of the ship. There wasn’t any light coming from it. Like the rest of the ship, it appeared to be of a single sheet of metal. Even where it joined to the metal of the floor and ceiling it was a solid surface, just a slight fading of color indicated any difference in the metal.

“That’s what we’ve all heard,” Solaria said. “Your grandfather knows more about the human mind than we do, and he might be better at this, but he’s too old for the jet packs.”

“But he’s still with you,” Professor Aduncus’ voice filled their minds. “Now focus on what you need to do.”

It made Skylar wonder why the professor hadn’t helped with the initial mental fight to get into the ship. Then he figured if things had gotten too tight, he would’ve lent his considerable strength to Del.

“Let me see if I can get it to create an interface,” Del said.

Seconds later, the metal of the column seemed to liquefy, and formed a touch screen.

“Now this will be easier.” Del seemed a little more awake as he began working the touch pad like he’d done with a similar one in the mindscape earlier. He tried several things. Time ticked by and the oxygen levels on their suits dropped.

“Del, we’re going to need to get replacement atmogens soon,” Skylar said as his oxygen gauge dropped to ten percent.

Del frowned and tapped on the screen.
